Jack - Forest Hills Central class of 2022

Jack's family has vacationed in Grand Haven every summer so it only made sense for us to take his senior photos there and to sneak in a family portrait while we were out and about. Sessions like this one always give me the chance to chat with clients and their parents as we walk from location to location and it was such a pleasure to meet such a wonderful family. Jack was such a good sport and played along as we tried to get some fun photos that would reflect his personality best. I think we nailed it.

Samuel - FHC

Sam's session was scheduled during a week when the temperatures were in the 90s. It was hot and humid and he wanted to have his photos at a place near and dear to his heart, Roselle Park, where he trained with his cross country team. The silos were a view that he wanted to include in his senior portraits and I wanted to deliver on that request. Roselle Park is one of the most open places around, literally no shade to be found and Sam wanted to wear some cooler weather clothes (on a 90 degree day may I remind you...) so I suggested we go early in the morning. He was a super good sport about it and we had an incredible time capturing some of my favorite images of the year. I love stepping outside of my comfort zone and finding ways to be creative in a new place.

Felicia and Josh were married on August 17th at Hilltop Memory Makers in Coral, Michigan. There was so much planning that went into this day and the details of it were simply amazing. Just watching these two throughout the day was so magical. If either of them felt stress, it instantly melted away when they were together. The day was truly about the love between these two and the joy that being around close family and friends brings to their lives. This was a celebration that everybody enjoyed to its fullest, including me. Trying to narrow down images to really represent their day was nearly impossible so enjoy the long blog post! Thank you to my incredible second shooter for the day, Tim Kamppinen.

Josh and Felicia's dog, Diesel was the "ring dog." He did a great job!

The "party" barn was a great place for cocktail hour and dessert. Again, the details that went into this day were just incredible.

Family portraits in Downtown Lowell

"Terrible Two's" squared

Ok this one is for all the Moms out there with young kids. So many people come to me and constantly apologize for their kids not looking at me or getting up and running around. PLEASE STOP! Every Single Two year old is like that. This mom came to me with her adorable two year old twins and her 5 year old son. Their attention spans lasted about 38 seconds and then the interest in everything else in the studio kicked in and they were off. It literally took 4 adults to keep this show rolling. In the end, we of course got a lot of super adorable photos that would make you think it was all calm and perfect but in reality it was anything but that. I made sure to include plenty of the "outtakes" so that you can see that it is TOTALLY NORMAL that your kids act like kids when they come to see me. I can handle it and will enjoy the madness. You can seriously sit on the couch and enjoy a cup of coffee if you like. You've earned it.

Kade and Melissa | A lakefront wedding

Weddings come in all flavors and this one was my very favorite kind. This celebration was all about love, family, close friends and LOTS of fun at the bride's favorite place in the world, her family's lake front cottage in White Cloud, Michigan. The weather called for severe thunderstorms all day and this was to be an outdoor party at it's finest with water sports, lawn games and all the fun of lake life. While many people were feeling concern for the outlook of the weather, Melissa put on her waterskis and said don't worry about it and I'll see you in a bit. The day turned out amazing. The rain held off for most of the day, right up until dinner moved everyone into the tent for the evening but even then it didn't keep anyone from enjoying the cottage and all it had to offer. Thank you so much to Melissa and Kade and their families for allowing me to be there and capture the day. Melissa, you have such a special family and it was an absolute honor to be there and meet Kade and his family. Congratulations my dear friend, I hope this little preview does any kind of justice to what a wonderful day it was.

Maybe my favorite bride and groom picture, ever. I so love this one. Yep, there I am with my girl. Melissa was one of the first girls I coached and she has always had a special place in my heart. I have so many fond memories of her as a teenager and I'm so happy to call her my friend as an adult. I I loved these moments between Melissa and her Dad. The bride and groom's first dance had a special partner who wanted to be part of the action.

Having a baby is such an miraculous time for any family but when it is a third baby, it is an even bigger adventure for the older siblings. This newborn session was such a statement in the reality of parenting, I had to chuckle. Parents are always so apologetic when their kids are "not behaving" or a newborn won't sleep, or I get peed or pooped on... it is all part of what I do, and it all happens during EVERY newborn session. Part of the adventure of photographing kids is working around their quirks and hopefully getting the shot to remember. This middle child wanted NO part of this session. None, nada, zilch. So... we do the best we can, and then we maybe swap out his head in photoshop. ;) What can I say, I do what must be done.

Studio Backdrops

Welcome to the studio! When planning for a session I like to talk about color and style and the kind of "look" you are hoping to achieve. I totally understand that when you haven't been to a photography studio before you might not have any idea what to expect SO, lucky for you I put together this little blog post about my backdrops. I collected some examples of my backdrops in use so you can see in advance what might be of interest to you. Keep in mind that colors can look very different depending on how I light them so you will see the same backdrops shown in multiple examples so you can see how they can look under different conditions. Backdrops also come in all sizes so I tried to group them together by the amount of people I can comfortably photograph on them. I photograph a lot of kids in the studio so if you are bringing your family, some of the backdrops may not be big enough for all of you and you will want to focus your attention on the top two collages.

Let me know which ones you think will help me best achieve the look you are going for in your portraits and I will have them ready to go when you arrive. There is a chance I have a few more up my sleeve but this will at least give us a place to start.

This first set includes my largest backdrops that can accommodate most sized groups. You can see that I have the standard paper roll type backgrounds in white, cream, dark gray and pink, I also have sage green which is not pictured. I also have several varieties of traditional style backgrounds in blues, browns and creams as well as some more modern and fun styles if you are feeling adventurous.

This next set contains backdrops that can comfortably fit a couple of kids in any position or a small family of 4 or 5 sitting.

When a client is driving an hour to have you take their family photos, you want to do an amazing job. Now add in the fact that the session was to take place at 7:00pm with a 2 1/2 year old and 6 month old twins, I'm not ashamed to say I was a nervous nilly! As it turned out, the 18 mph winds from earlier in the day died down, the sun came out and the kids were all perfect. We had a great time and finished the session just as the twins started to let us know they were done. Thank you so much for making the drive, I think we got some keepers! :)

Newborns can either be the easiest thing in the world to photograph, or the most challenging. This little sweetheart was in such a bad mood the day of his big photoshoot that we ended up having to reschedule because NOTHING we tried could calm him down. Our second attempt was a bit more successful but he was still so interested in what we were doing that he would barely close his little peepers for more than a minute at a time and then he would wake himself up and start wiggling all over. He is just the cutest thing, and it was hard to go wrong, even with him squirming around. Thank you so much for inviting me into this precious time in your lives!

A Mother's Gift - Grand Rapids Family Photographer

I was so excited to take photos of these three gorgeous kids for their mom who received this special photo session as a gift from her awesome husband. Way to go Greg! This family is so special to my husband and I. The first time I met both of them was in the hospital, right after their son was born and then that next year Greg was the best man in our wedding. To take photos for them now, 9 1/2 years later is a reminder of how fast time goes and how important good friends are. Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with me and I look forward to the adventures the NEXT decade will bring!

Wedding fun at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids, MI

It was such a pleasure to work with Jennifer and Jonny on their wedding day. They traveled from North Carolina to celebrate their marriage in Jennifer's home town of Grand Rapids. They had friends and family travel in from all over the country so it was perfect to have the entire day take place right at the JW Marriott. The wedding party snuck off for a little trolley ride for some fun time together away from the hotel and a few photo ops in a more natural setting. It was a crazy, hectic day but at then end of it, an amazing time was had by all. Thank you for including me in your celebration and here's to many years of happiness together.

I love this "voila" moment when the bridesmaids finally figured out how to bustle Jennifer's dress. It was classic.

The biggest dilemma of the day was which earrings to wear! Jennifer had two beautiful pairs and after much discussion, decided to go with the pair that best showed her fun loving side. Great choice, they were perfect!

Jonny is simply one of the funniest guys you will meet. He had so much fun all day and I really enjoyed watching him soak in every moment and enjoy each second to the fullest.

Jonny was so excited to have found a Mariache band to play at the reception. He and Jennifer will be having another wedding in Mexico with the rest of his family that couldn't make it.

A Romantic Engagement Session

This was a dream engagement session. We had the most amazing locations to photograph at, starting with a beautiful alfalfa field and barn, followed by a quaint canoe ride on a private pond and ending with a gorgeous sunset at Sleepy Hollow State Park in Laingsburg, MI. It was absolutely magical. I am so excited to photograph this beautiful couple's wedding soon. They say the third time is a charm, well my session with Eva was certainly charmed. She was the third beautiful baby to return to me this spring, 6 months after their newborn shoots, to show off her new skills. She was so adorable and crazy strong. She was sitting up like it was no big thing and she was excited to flaunt it! She was all smiles and we were even able to capture a couple of her and big sister.

I continue to be surprised by how quickly time passes when there are babies in your life. It seems like just yesterday that I took Andrew's newborn photos and here we are already at his 6 Month photo session. He was such a happy boy during our chilly morning session at the barn in downtown Ada. It was clear that he was enjoying getting to be outside in the sunshine for one of the first times in his life! I can't wait to see what he is up to at his 1st birthday!

So anyone with a baby just thinking about crawling has seen this pose. I will always love the "flying" that these little people do. It never ceases to crack me up.

Of course, I made Mom & Dad jump in for one. :)

Happy 1st Birthday Jayce!

Well, I had this GREAT plan for Jayce's first birthday cake smash session. Or so I thought... I went to the park, picked out a fabulous spot and started hanging these adorable paper fans in the trees to make his backdrop a little more festive. Of course, the wind started to pick up and the fans were not looking as adorable as I thought, and then Jayce and his family arrived and he IMMEDIATELY hurried right over to the colorful toys hanging in the sky and promptly destroyed them like any small child would do. You would think I would have seen that coming having two little tornadoes of my own at home. Well, it made me laugh and I caught a few photos of his destruction before we got going on the REAL fun.

Jayce wasn't so sure WHAT he was supposed to do with this cake in front of him so big brother stepped in to help him out. Seriously, it doesn't get any cuter than that.

So NOW it is all making sense! He enjoyed a few nibbles of the delicious cake but he really LOVED demolishing it.

Oh, and did I mention Jayce is a Cinco de Mayo baby?!? Look at this hat his parents brought along! I love it and see a tradition in his future. Happy Birthday sweet boy!

I was so excited to take family photos for my best friend's extended family. I have known her parents since I was all of 12 years old (when I wasn't the nicest little "only child" mind you) so I know these personalities and what the REAL dynamics and expressions SHOULD be. It was quite a challenge, as usual, to get everyone on the same page but I think we finally did it and managed to capture the love and craziness between all of these amazing people. I love you guys!

Newborn Andrew

I have to admit, when I received the call to take Andrew's newborn photos I was a little nervous. He was going to be one month old the day of the session and I wasn't sure what to expect. My concerns were totally put to rest the minute he and his mother arrived at my studio. He was simply the best baby ever and that is saying a lot considering I had one super baby of my own (I had one grumpy one of my own as well so I know all about those...) Andrew literally let us take pictures with no crying, no fussing, just complete fascination with the props and the lights. It was so much fun. Thank you to his mom and dad for inviting me into this precious time for their family and congratulations on their beautiful baby.

I love this picture. I know Andrew's dad from my time coaching swimming and this picture is so appropriate as it looks like he either just won a race or is cheering for his teammates. Perfect. Go Andrew!

A Mother's Day Portrait Surprise

When Shawn contacted me about giving his wife a family photo session for Mother's Day I was excited to say the least. As a mother, I knew this surprise would be a special one for Tonya. I even hinted to MY husband what an AWESOME idea this was by this AMAZING dad, he didn't pick up on it... After speaking with Tonya and finding out this would be their FIRST family photo session I could not wait to do my very best for her. These children were absolute rock stars. They were so cooperative, had so much fun and literally made my job super, super easy. Thank you so much Shawn and Tonya for letting me photograph your beautiful family!!!

These kids LOVED the covered bridge at Fallasburg Park. They wanted to pose themselves all kinds of fun ways. I think they would have stayed there the whole session. Except Peyton, he would have posed anywhere as long as he was the center of the picture! He was hilarious.

This is hands down my favorite sibling image I have taken. SO adorable!!!

Bob and Jane are such a beautiful couple that I am proud to call friends. They chose to have an intimate family wedding that was absolutely magical. They are both such wonderful people and they have so many friends that are anxious to see moments from their amazing day so I am so particularly excited to present these images.

Bob and Jane's intimate wedding on April 27th, 2013 at Keystone Eastside.

Bob really enjoyed sharing a few special moments with his son while he was getting ready. These cufflinks are a family heirloom.

During the exchange of rings Bob and Jane came down from the alter and had their families stand with them to share in their promise to each other.

After the ceremony I had a little fun with the newlyweds.

ReShay - Jackson High School Senior

When I met ReShay at our first session location I asked her if she "knew anything about posing" or if she needed specific cues to position herself. She mentioned she might know "a little bit" already. That was an understatement. Five minutes later I knew we were going to have a very fun, very successful shoot. This beautiful young lady is a natural. During our time together we had some laughs at our different locations on our steamy 90 degree day. Our first stop was an old farm that ReShay was convinced was haunted. It was quite comical to joke around about the faces peeking out of the windows at her. Then we headed to the beach where it took her about 30 seconds to be IN the water cooling off. I was not sad to follow her in, camera and all to get some great Lake Michigan shots.

Megan is a beautiful Rockford Senior who was willing to give me a chance at taking her Senior Portraits. We had a great time at Fallasburg Park in Lowell checking out all of the great places to use as our setting. Megan also braved a path covered in poison ivy to get some great train track photos. They were worth it and I think we were all spared any itchy consequences.

Jess & Andy - A Saugatuck Wedding

I had the opportunity to second shoot with Misty Minna at Jess & Andy's beautiful ceremony at The Belvedere Inn in Saugatuck, Michigan.

I loved that I was able to capture this image as Jess headed down the stairs after getting ready with her bridesmaids.

The whole bridal party wore matching sunglasses during the ceremony and that gave me the unique chance to capture Jess's reflection in Andy's glasses as they exchanged their vows.
